Plymouth . How to Install Rear Brakes on a DodgeReplacing the rear brakes on a Dodge vehicle requires replacement of the brake pads and the rear brake rotors. Chrysler recommends regular maintenance of your vehicle's brakes so that you can spot damage and wear before it leads to brake failure. The rear brakes endure less stress from braking than the front brakes, but are critical in maintaining control of the vehicle during braking. First timers should be able to install the Dodge's rear brakes in under one hour. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Tire blocks Lug wrench Jack Jack stand 13mm socket Ratchet Bungee cord 15mm wrench Wire brush Brake-parts cleaner Rotors Cloth towel C-clamp Brake grease Step by Step : 1 Park the Dodge on a relatively flat surface. Turn off the engine. Place tire blocks in front of the front tires to prevent the vehicle from rolling forward. 2 Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels with a lug wrench. 3 Place the jack beneath the frame at the rear of the vehicle and lift the back tires at least 2-inches off the ground. 4 Place jack stands under the rear axles for support. 5 Remove the lug nuts and take the rear wheels/tires off. 6 Remove the caliper slide bolts from the back side of the calipers (the side of the caliper facing inward toward the vehicle) with a 13mm socket and ratchet. 7 Lift the caliper away from the rear rotors and suspend it above the rear brake assembly with a bungee cord. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake line. 8 Slide the worn brake pads from the caliper bracket. 9 Remove the two caliper brackets with a 15mm wrench. Lift the caliper bracket from the rotor and set it aside. Step by Step : 10 Grab the rear brake rotor on both sides and pull it straight away from the vehicle's wheel-well. Step by Step : 11 Clean the back of the wheel hub with brake-parts cleaner and a wire brush. Step by Step : 12 Spray the new brake rotor with brake cleaner and wipe the excess cleaner and packing oil away from the disc with a clean cloth towel. Step by Step : 13 Place the new rotor onto the wheel bolts and push it all the way onto the wheel hub. Step by Step : 14 Replace the caliper bracket and screw in the bracket's bolts with the 15mm wrench. Step by Step : 15 Apply brake grease to the back sides of the new brake pads. Slide the pads into the slots of the caliper bracket. Step by Step : 16 Place a C-clamp over the rear caliper and the piston that extends from the inside of the caliper. Squeeze the piston into the side of the caliper. Remove the clamp once the piston is fully recessed within the caliper. Step by Step : 17 Place the caliper over the new brake pads and caliper bracket. Screw in the caliper slide bolts with the 13mm socket and ratchet. Step by Step : 18 Repeat the process to install the brakes on the opposite side of the Dodge. Step by Step : 19 Return the rear wheels to the wheel bolts. Screw on the lug nuts by hand. 20 Lift the back of the Dodge with the jack and remove the jack stands. 21 Lower the rear-end of the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. 22 Start the vehicle and pump the brake pedal until the pedal response returns to normal (meaning the rear brake caliper pistons have been properly reset).

This is possible in great part to the brake system in your vehicle, which is the main reason Saturn recommends you check brake components every six months and replace brake pads every 12 months or sooner, if necessary. Rear pads are replaced in a way similar to front pads. Fortunately, following some safety precautions, this is a maintenance item you can tackle at home. This procedure applies to SW1 models equipped with rear brake rotor assemblies. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Clean turkey baster 8 oz. plastic bottle Lug wrench Floor jack 2 jack stands 2 wood blocks Ratchet Deep socket Coat hanger Brake parts cleaner Lint-free towels Brake piston driver SA91110NE 2 new sets of brake pad clips Torque wrench New brake fluid (optional)Removing the Brake Pads Step by Step : 1 Park your Saturn on a level surface, release the parking brake and set the transmission to neutral. 2 Open the hood and remove the cap from the reservoir of the brake master cylinder. This is located on the driver’s side of the firewall. 3 Draw at least half the brake fluid from the reservoir, using a turkey baster, and store it in an 8-oz. plastic bottle for later recycling. Replace the reservoir cap, but do not tighten it yet. 4 Loosen both rear wheels’ lug nuts, using a lug wrench. 5 Raise each of the rear wheels with a floor jack and support your Saturn with a jack stand on each side. 6 Install a wood block at the front of each front tire to keep your vehicle from sliding forward. 7 Remove both rear wheels. 8 Unfasten and remove the two brake caliper mounting bolts, using a ratchet and deep socket. Work on only one of the brake assemblies at a time. 9 Pull the brake caliper off the caliper mounting bracket and secure the caliper to the rear suspension, using a coat hanger. This will prevent damage to the brake line connected to the caliper. Step by Step : 10 Slide the inboard and outboard brake pads from the caliper mounting bracket and remove the upper and lower bake pad clips from the bracket. Installing New Brake Pads Step by Step : 1 Clean the brake assembly components with brake parts cleaner and wipe off the liquid with lint-free towels. 2 Seat the caliper piston by rotating the piston clockwise, using the brake piston driver SA91110NE. Once the piston has bottomed, adjust the piston indentations so they align with the tabs on the back of the new inboard brake pad, using the piston driver. 3 Install new upper and lower brake pad clips on the caliper bracket and slide the new inboard and outboard brake pads into the caliper bracket. 4 Lower the brake caliper in position over the caliper bracket and install the two mounting bolts hand-tight. Tighten the mounting bolts to 27 ft-lbs. (36 Nm), using a torque wrench. 5 Replace the brake pads on the other rear brake assembly following from Step 8, in the previous section, through Step 4 of this section. 6 Install both rear wheels and tighten the lug nuts snugly. 7 Lower your Saturn and finish tightening the lug nuts, using the lug wrench. 8 Apply the parking brake and remove the wood blocks from the front tires. 9 Tighten the reservoir cap on the brake master cylinder. Step by Step : 10 Operate the brake pedal several times to seat the new brake pads on the brake rotor. Check the brake fluid in the reservoir and add new fluid to bring the level up to the “Full” mark. Tighten the reservoir cap and close the hood.
